Discarded batteries: check residual capacities with EA devices or discharge completely
Germany, Viersen, 13/04/2021 – E-mobility is booming. Since 2015, the number of e-vehicles worldwide has grown from 1.4 million to almost 8 million in 2019. But with increasing operating time, the lithium-ion batteries used are becoming less effective and need to be replaced in the vehicle. The old batteries then begin a second life or are finally recycled. For this purpose, their residual capacities must be checked or the batteries must be completely discharged – with devices from EA Elektro-Automatik (EA). The bidirectional power supply EA-PSB 10000 and the regenerative electronic load EA-ELR 10000 optimally prepare the sustainable use of the discarded batteries – with 96 % efficiency in the mains regeneration of the absorbed voltage. Thus EA continues sustainably, safely and cost-efficiently what has started with e-mobility.
The EA-PSB 10000 is ideal for testing in the field of second-life application area.
The EA-PSB 10000 and the EA-ELR 10000 allow residual discharge for final recycling.
Second-life use for rechargeable batteries
If the storage capacity of the battery systems is no longer sufficient for use in e-vehicles, residual capacities may well be available for second-life use. The lithium-ion batteries are then suitable, for example, as energy storage for solar power or wind energy. With the EA-PSB 10000 bidirectional power supply, the batteries are tested for their remaining capacity by charging them to almost 100% and then discharging them again.
EA-PSB 10000: Time-saving and cost-efficient battery testing
The EA-PSB 10000 bidirectional power supply offers decisive advantages: With 30 kW in 4U, it currently has the highest power density on the market. Up to 1.92 MW is possible in a rack system, which means that mass testing is also possible without any problems. In addition, EA-PSB 10000 can seamlessly switch between operation as source and sink, which offers additional time savings.
The true autoranging of the devices guarantees the maximum possible charge and complete discharge of the batteries through the high load currents even at voltages below 2 volts. EA-PSB 10000 is also highly cost-effective thanks to the 96% efficiency of the mains recovery of the absorbed voltage.
EA-ELR 10000: Safety and efficiency when fully discharging batteries
After a certain operating time, batteries can only be finally recycled. For this purpose, they are disassembled into their individual parts, which can be further used. This process is not without danger. To prevent ignition, lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion polymer batteries must be completely discharged. This is achieved with the EA-ELR 10000 regenerative electronic load – currently the most efficient technology available.
More efficiency in battery recycling: EA-PSB 10000 and EA-ELR 10000 offer users performance and ease of use.
Sustainable recovery of residual energy from the grid
With 30 kW in 4U, the EA-ELR 10000 series, like the EA-PSB 10000 series, have the highest power density on the market and achieve up to 1.92 MW in rack systems. Users can extract large amounts of residual charge from batteries in a short time and feed it back into the grid with an efficiency of up to 96%. In this way, grid regeneration reduces operating costs and protects the environment, and also lowers heat generation, which usually makes expensive external cooling systems unnecessary. Optionally, EA-ELR 10000 is available in a sealed enclosure design with 90% efficiency water cooling.
In a rack, our equipment can achieve up to 1.92MW of power for mass testing and mass discharging.
Operating Software EA Power Control Software
The EA Power Control operating software with user-friendly interface allows convenient and precise control of EA products via Windows PC. This allows users to conveniently operate DC power supplies and electronic loads by remote control. The optional Multi Control also allows the settings of up to 20 EA devices to be managed simultaneously – a highly efficient method, especially for mass testing and discharging.
EA Power Control provides users with a clear user interface.
